The slow start to the season for many of us across the country this year may tempt golf operators to take a gamble and push the season as far as we can.
That’s understandable if you lost considerable revenue out of the gate and have been attempting to play catch-up all season in the revenue department.
There is a price to pay, however. Put off aeration and other maintenance needed to get your course ready for winter and you may get caught by an early winter storm that means some jobs go unfinished.
As one GNN Poll indicated a couple of weeks ago, 42 per cent of respondents felt that an extended autumn is critical to their businesses, while another 38 per cent felt it would certainly help after the effects of the slow start.
Only 20 per cent said they did fine in 2011, but they’ll take good weather anytime.
That brings us to this week’s GNN Poll.
With so many operations around the country hoping for an extended season, how far are they willing to take it?
Have you set a closing date and will you stick to it in order to get final maintenance done before the snow flies?
Are you going to roll with the weather and stay open as long as possible, hoping you can move fast enough to get everything done before winter sets in?
Is short-term gain worth long-term pain if your course isn’t put to bed with everything on your to-do list checked off?
Have you set a firm closing date or are you planning to roll with the weather for extra revenue?
- We’re sticking with our closing date. Not getting everything done can have long-term consequences. (58%)
- It’s been a tough year and we’re rolling with the weather for extra revenue. (42%)
Thank-you.

We always look forward to you offering your thoughts in the Comments section below, as well. Tell us what kind of a season it’s been for you. Is bad weather becoming more of a regular challenge than it ever was? What do you think 2012 will bring or have you given up predicting?
We welcome your thoughts on this and other topics.
