Depending on how you look at it, a recent post on social media was either sad or humourous. It showed a bottle of booze being poured over a bowl of cereal and underneath it said “Breakfast in the pandemic.”
There’s little doubt that’s how many people feel since COVID-19 began disrupting our lives more than a year ago.
Last Wednesday in Ontario was a perfect example as the third state of emergency since the pandemic began was declared in that province, with a mixed reaction of understanding and outrage from its citizens.
COVID fatigue isn’t exclusive to Ontario. Across this land, it reaches new levels with every lockdown or restriction and it is occasionally directed at the wrong person, such as an employee, who is only trying to enforce safety protocols that are necessary in the pandemic.
In the golf industry, we’re into the second year of such protocols that have helped make golf courses safe havens for recreation, but have you ever seen a member or customer go over the top in protesting or resisting such protocols, or even wearing mask?
That’s the question in this week’s GNN Poll.
You can answer below or on the GNN home page and if you’d like to add a few thoughts on this subject, please use the Comments section below.
Have you ever dealt with a member or customer who went too far in protesting or resisting COVID-19 safety protocols, or even wearing mask?
- Never. (49%)
- A few times. (35%)
- Frequently. (16%)
Thank-you.

Hutch – the mask is not top of mind at the course for some. The younger folk (teens) need constant reminding of what and why – mainly if they want golf to remain a safe sanctuary during this lockdown, they must wear masks and distance. They think they will never get sick – so I try to get them to think of the other golfers. I am sure they are fine with the store front challenge, and they will learn after a few days on the course if we all work together to keep this a constant across all courses.
A real challenge is to get all the DHU’s with the same interpretation of the law that masks only are required on carts. I even ask couples to respect this – in solidarity with getting everyone else to wear them on the carts.
Challenging times to be in the business – but we are also busy so it is all worth it!

Don
