It would be irreverent to not mention the 40th anniversary of what is arguably the most irreverent and funniest sports movie of all time.
Caddyshack is to golf what Slap Shot is to hockey and was released 40 years ago this past Saturday.
It hardly seemed possible that it was that movie’s 25th anniversary when I received a complimentary copy, but now that it’s 40, I’m really feeling old and frustrated because I have no VCR to play it.
Even the USGA used the late Rodney Dangerfield’s famous line, “While we’re young” in a TV campaign to combat slow play, featuring Tiger Woods, Arnold Palmer, Clint Eastwood, Paula Creamer, Annika Sorenstam and Butch Harmon. My favourite is the one with Palmer and Eastwood (above).
When it comes to characters, I’m sure Al Czervik (Dangerfield), Carl Spackler (Bill Murray), Ty Webb (Chevy Chase) and Danny Noonan (Michael O’Keefe) stand out as memorable characters, I always give props to the late Ted Knight, who played the nasty, snooty Judge Smails to perfection, even if there were several times he resembled his old Ted Baxter character on Mary Tyler Moore.
It might be the way the world is these days, but I found Michael Thompson’s emotional reaction to his first win in over seven years at the 3M Open on Sunday especially refreshing, illustrating relief at his sudden fortunate turn of events and offering an insight into the support of his family when times were tough … Thompson had a bag full of PING for the win, including the G400 LST driver (10º), G400 3W, #G410 7W, #Blueprint irons (4-PW), Glide 2.0 Stealth wedges (52/SS, 56/SS, 60/TS), Classic #Anser 4 putter … Alena Sharp is the only Canadian in the field as the LPGA Tour resumes its season on Friday at the Drive On Championship in Toledo, Ohio, on Friday.
