Take Advantage Of The Holidays

December 11, 2011 By Kyle German

Here on the Lower Mainland, winter’s not really cold, but it does get cold and dreary, not really inspirational to golfers wanting to take lessons.

We’ve got a few people who have bought some packages. Remember when you were 15 or 16 and you really didn’t care about the weather? These guys are around 40 and the same way, which is pretty cool from a business standpoint.

Other than that, we’re going to have a pretty relaxed holiday season. Last year, we had a family reunion and went to Hawaii and had a great time.

I’ve got a brother in Portland and another in Prague. I’ll probably see my brother in Portland for a pre-Christmas gathering, but my wife’s family is mostly around here, so Christmas will be pretty relaxed.

On Christmas Day, we usually do breakfast at my wife’s family’s house and my family usually comes over, as well, to celebrate with Taryn’s family. Then, we usually have Christmas dinner somewhere else.

I don’t know if you’d call it quiet. My son Lane has become the master gift opener. It doesn’t matter who the gift is for — he just loves opening it.

The past couple of years with Lane, and now with my daughter Azalea, have been a lot of fun at Christmas. It’s been a lot more fun than it’s ever been and I’ve really enjoyed it.

Holidays have never meant that much to me because we work so many of them in the golf industry, especially in the summer.

For example, I’m never sure from one year to the next when Canadian Thanksgiving falls. Oddly enough, I always know when American Thanksgiving is because, for six years, I’ve flew back from the Titleist and FootJoy PGA Club Professionals Championship of Canada on U.S. Thanksgiving Day.

To a lot of people in the golf business, holidays mean a busy time at work. Last year, I was in Hawaii for 11 days and it was the first time I’d taken off an extended time at Christmas and it was great.

I’m looking forward to spending it at home this year.
