The Castlegar Golf Club in the Kootenays, above the Columbia River in British Columbia, is seeing a golf course superintendent.
After a 44-year career as a superintendent and 17 years with the Castlegar Golf Club, superintendent Craig Stocker is retiring in February of 2021.
The club is searching for a dedicated and hard working superintendent, with strong agronomic and leadership skills, as well as a passion for providing exceptional golf course conditions in a semi-private club setting.
The superintendent will report to the director of golf and work closely with the course committees to achieve the club’s goals, vision and mandate.
The superintendent is expected to provide quality leadership, with a strong attention to detail and to manage the department in an inclusive, supportive manner to ensure excellent course conditions on a daily basis.
Contribute to the development and the implementation of standards of quality and maintenance for the golf course.
Demonstrate leadership and be a dynamic member of the organization.
Hire, train, coach and supervise the unionized maintenance personnel of the golf course according to the collective bargaining agreement, policies and procedures in place.
Prepare, manage and control the golf course operational budget in conjunction with the director of golf and the finance committee.
Provide regular and up to date commentary on the golf course conditions, maintenance activities, projects, environmental issues, expenses and labor.
Render professional advice, opinions, assistance and services to the director of golf and committees as required.
Oversee the scheduling and allocation of the unionized maintenance personnel and the equipment to accomplish the daily work efficiently.
Keep accurate and complete records on the cost of inventory, the maintenance of equipment, pesticide and fertilizer applications and other practices.
Develop an environment that is empowered in the golf culture and that passionately provides a unique and exclusive golf experience for our members and green fee players.
Maintain good and open communication with the board of directors, management team, all employees, members, guests and all clients.
Oversee the use of all domestic and irrigation water use in accordance to government regulations.
A minimum of one year experience as an Accredited Golf Course Superintendent or three years experience as a Class “A” Superintendent in good standing with the CGSA or an assistant superintendent with five years experience.
Graduated from a recognized turf management program.
A highly motivated professional.
Possess strong communication abilities both written and verbal.
Valid B.C. pesticide license or be willing to acquire one.
Valid B.C. Small Water Systems Certificate or be willing to acquire one.
Knowledge of the game of golf and its rules.
Excellent knowledge in finance for the administration of budgets.
Successfully manage both poa annua and bent grass greens.
Ability to follow the Maintenance Standards and Practices set out by the Castlegar Golf Club.
Be current and well versed in agronomy, turf grass and tree management.
Strong management and forecasting skills for operational and capital budgets.
Experience in developing capital equipment replacement plans.
Ability to hire, train, lead and performance manage staff to ensure high productivity and excellent results in a unionized environment.
Extensive knowledge of Toro Osmac irrigation system and the computer run Lynx system.
Subscribe to sustainable maintenance practices.
Ability to source, negotiate and coordinate with outside vendors for course projects and maintenance.
Project management experience.
