Stephen Ames opened the Senior Open Championship at Gleneagles in Scotland with a bogey-free, six-under 64 that included an eagle on the par five 10th hole.
Ames and American Glen Day are tied atop the leaderboard, with a one-shot lead over Paul Broadhurst, Jerry Kelly, Kent Jones and Darren Clarke going into Friday’s second round of the senior major.
“I hit the ball nice, solid, hit a lot of greens, gave myself the opportunities and any time I had some long-ish putts for birdie, I gave myself some nice foot-and-a-half, two-foot putts for par. It wasn’t too stressful, let’s put it that way,” said Ames.
David Morland IV opened with a 71 and is tied for 58th. Alan McLean shot a 74.
