Brooke Henderson’s lone bogey of the day came on her final hole of Thursday’s first round of the AIG Women’s Open at Muirfield.
Just a couple of weeks after her second career major victory at the Amundi Evian Championship, Henderson shot a one-under 70 on a cool, windy day to open the final major of the season.
She goes into Friday’s second round in a tie for 13th, five shots off the lead held by Hinako Shibuno, who opened with a 65.
“Just really steady. Lots of pars. Only two birdies which is not a lot, but I only made one bogey, so I kind of made up for it,” said Henderson.
“I feel like I made a couple clutch par saves, especially on No. 9. Made about a 15-or-maybe-longer-footer just to save par on the par five, so that was really clutch to keep the round going,” she said.
“Then, the back nine, just made a lot of like six-footers to kind of just keep the momentum going forward. Hopefully (Friday), I’ll just go out and make an early birdie and make up for today,” said Henderson, adding that she was happy to see the sun come out after a damp start to the round.
“I was so soaked after my warmup, but was really happy when the sun came out and it definitely made a difference in the temperature, too. It was very windy and the scores are showing that it’s tough,” she said.
Maude-Aimee Leblanc finished the day with a 76.
