Corey Conners had just one bogey on the day as he opened the BMW Championship in Wilmington, Del., with a three-under 68 on Thursday.
Conners, who had consecutive birdies on the par five 14th and par three 15th is tied for 13th, four shots off Keegan Bradley’s lead, going into Friday’s second round.
“I hit a really nice shot to 15, really long, tough par three. I hit a really nice, smooth four-iron, was kind of between clubs, but was able to use the slope behind the hole. I got that in there to about five or six feet behind the hole and that was a nice two to write down,” said Conners.
“It was a solid round. I feel like I hit the ball really well, gave myself a lot of looks for birdie, pretty stress-free round for the most part. Yeah, certainly would have liked to have converted more of the chances that I had, but solid start,” he said.
Conners is also projected to 30th in the FedEx Cup standings, which puts him on the bubble for moving on to next week’s Tour Championship at East Lake in Atlanta for the third time in four years, which will happen if he remains in the top 30 after Sunday’s final round.
“Obviously it’s a huge goal at the beginning of the year to make it to the Tour Championship. I would say I’ve had a solid year so far to give myself a chance and just trying to have some fun this week, keep playing like I did today, and hopefully, I can play my way into the Tour Championship,” said Conners.
Adam Hadwin is tied for 24th after finishing with a round of 69 on Thursday. Taylor Pendrith shot an even par 71 and is tied for 42nd. Mackenzie Hughes is tied for 61st after posting a 75.
