Luis Carrera of Mexico City fired a 66 during Thursday’s final round at Vancouver’s Point Grey Golf and Country Club to claim the title at the 117th Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship.
Carrera, 22, made eagle on his first hole and the momentum catapulted him up the leaderboard and his consistent play resulted in a solid, bogey-free round.
With the win, Carrera becomes only the second Mexican golfer and first since Rafael Alarcon in 1979 to take home the title.
Robbie Latter of Mississauga, Ont., finished two strokes back at eight under. In third place was Montreal’s Remi Chartier at six under.
Along with the title, Carrera has earned an exemption into the 2023 RBC Canadian Open at Toronto’s Oakdale Golf and Country Club, as well as the 2022 U.S. Amateur Championship being contested Aug. 15-22 in Paramus, N.J.
The final leaderboard is here.
