Note: Svensson Earns U.S. Open Alternate Spot After Sectional Playoff, Tiger Not Ready For Open, DeLaet Retires And More

June 7, 2022 By GNN

I previously informed the USGA that I will not be competing in the @usopengolf as my body needs more time to get stronger for major championship golf. I do hope and plan to be ready to play in Ireland at @JPProAm and at @TheOpen next month. I’m excited to get back out there soon!

After playing in a five-for-one playoff Tuesday morning at a U.S. Open sectional qualifier at Kinsale Golf and Fitness Club/Wedgewood Golf and Country Club in Columbus, Ohio, Adam Svensson failed to qualify, but he did earn second alternate status. Svensson shot 70-68 on Monday to finish five under over 36 holes on a day disrupted by two lengthy weather delays. Svensson finished in a five-way tie for 13th at a site where only 13 qualifiers got through … Bob Weeks of TSN reports here that Graham DeLaet, plagued by back injuries throughout his career, has announced his retirement from the PGA Tour … Tiger Woods informed the USGA that he won’t be ready for next week’s U.S. Open, but he hopes to play next month in Ireland and at the 150th Open Championship at St. Andrews (see above) … This week’s GNN Poll asks readers how their rounds in May compare to the same month last year at the golf courses where they work. As of this writing, 54 per cent of respondents said less than 2021, with 20 per cent saying much better and 20 per cent saying about the same. Another six per cent said rounds were better. Sad but not surprising to see DeLaet retire. As with so many others, one wonders what might have been had there been no ongoing back issues. It was always a pleasure chatting with him and watching him play on the Canadian Tour.
