Adam Hadwin has qualified to play next month’s British Open, while Graeme McDowell also earned the right to play his home course of Royal Portrush by finishing in the top 10 at the RBC Canadian Open.
Hadwin shot an even par 70 to finish sixth at 12 under at Hamilton Golf and Country Club on Sunday, while McDowell was another two back in a tie for eighth after he shot a final round 68.
Up to three players in the top 10 who weren’t already exempt received their tickets into the Open Championship. Hadwin and McDowell were the only players who finished in the top 10 who weren’t already exempt.
“My sole focus was getting into the top three to get into the U.S. Open next week. Actually, to be honest, I kind of forgot about that little caveat there with the RBC Canadian Open being in the Qualifying Series this year,” said Hadwin, who started the day one shot off the lead.
“As disappointed as I am, it’s nice to get into another major this year. We’ll rest up, prepare and get ready to go for that,” he said.
Hadwin also won the Rivermead Cup as low Canadian for the fourth time in his career.
