Canadians came away with a win and a loss on opening day at the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play on Wednesday as Mackenzie Hughes defeated Paul Casey 3&2, but Corey Conners lost 3&1 to Matthew Wolff in Austin, Tx.
Hughes birdied the third, fourth and sixth holes to go 3-up, but Casey birdied the par three seventh to narrow the score as Hughes parred the hole.
With a 2-up lead after the turn, Casey bogeyed the 10th, while Hughes parred to restore his 3-up advantage, but bogeyed himself while Casey parred the 13th.
Another bogey by Casey on 14 put the lead back to 3-up for Hughes, who parred the hole, before his 3&2 victory was clinched on the 16th hole.
Conners struck early with a birdie on the first hole that gave him a 1-up lead, but Wolff birdied the third to even the score before Conners went 2-up with birdies on the sixth and ninth holes.
Conners bogeyed the par five 12th and Wolff parred to narrow the score before Wolff pulled even with a birdie on the next hole, where Connors parred.
Another Connors bogey on 14 gave the lead to Wolff who parred the par four hole, before birdies on 15 and the par three 17th gave Wolff a 3&1 victory.
Connors will face Matt Fitzpatrick on Thursday at 10:14 a.m. local time. Hughes will square off against Webb Simpson at 12:26 p.m.

Aaron Cockerill is tied for 49th midway through the Kenya Savannah Classic, where he shot a second round, three under 68 on Wednesday.
Cockerill is five under going into Thursday’s third round.
