By the time Alan McLean got to the sixth hole of Saturday’s second round of the Shaw Charity Classic in Calgary, he was already two under.
By the time he reached the ninth hole, he was one over on the day.
“Unfortunately today, I made a double bogey on seven and I bogeyed eight, but barring that, the back nine was pretty solid and I just hung in there for a little bit. Yeah, a couple of errors, but that’s golf,” said McLean, who birdied his final hole of the day to finish with an even par 70.
McLean goes into Sunday’s final round in a tie for 11th at two under through two rounds, five shots off the lead.
“You never know when you’re going to put a good round together, right? Hopefully (Sunday), that will be the case,” said McLean.
“The course is playing, with the breeze, it was a complete different angle today. I think it was from the south, southeast today,” he said.
“Yesterday, it was from the north, so the course played differently, especially those first few holes, you’re downwind. Yesterday, we were into the wind, so we’re hitting different shots, different clubs,” he added.
“So I’m not surprised that the scores are low. The greens are, like I said, the defence of the golf course. The greens are superb, they just keep running out, so if you’re out of position you’ve got to work some magic to get the ball in the hole,” said McLean.
Mike Weir made the turn at even par, then put up three consecutive birdies between the 10th and 12 holes, but bogeyed 13 and 17 to finish with a score of 69.
Weir goes into the final round in a tie for 16th at one under.
“Played OK today. I actually didn’t play as well as yesterday. Yesterday, I hit some shots a lot closer to the hole and played a little better. Today, I didn’t play great,” said Weir.
“In the middle of the round there, I hit some really nice shots and was able to get a little rally going, but had too many shots in the rough and not enough ones close to the hole,” he said.
“To get those, birdie 10, 11 and 12, hit a beautiful shot into 13 and three-putt, that’s just crazy that I did that. That happened and that just killed all the momentum,” he added.
“I’ve got to get a fast start (Sunday). I’ll have to get rolling early and sharpen up early in the round. I’ve been over par both days early, so I need to go the other way (Sunday) early and get under par and then, maybe I can make some noise on the back nine,” said Weir.
