Just 10 days short of his 51st birthday, Mike Weir has an early gift with his first win as a PGA Tour Champions player.
In his 14th start on the senior circuit, Weir fired a four under 68 to secure the victory at the Insperity Invitational at the Woodlands near Houston. It was his first victory in 13 and a half years, dating back to the 2007 Fry’s Electronics Open on the PGA Tour.
As he neared the final hole of the tournament, Weir was tied with John Daly for the lead at 10 under. Daly had briefly been leading by two after an eagle on 13, but an eagle of his own by Weir on 13 put the two players in a tie at the top.
Weir followed up that eagle with a bogey on 14, a birdie on 15 and missed birdie opportunities on 16 and 17.
Daly double bogeyed the last hole to fall into a tie for second. Weir parred the 18th hole for a final round, four under 68 that clinched the two shot victory. Weir finished the final round with five birdies, the eagle on 13 and three bogeys.
It was his second top three finish in his last three events and his third top 10 in four events this year.
Stephen Ames tied for 13th at three under over the two rounds of the tournament.
